A Q Laboratories Case Study: Rapid Legionella Outbreak Response at a Resort Hotel

Managing Legionella risk is a high-stakes responsibility. For organizations responsible for water systems in healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, and commercial properties, the health of occupants and regulatory compliance depend on proactive management of these systems. That’s why choosing the right laboratory partner isn’t just a decision; it can be the difference between a smooth operation and a public health crisis.

Is Your Water System’s Microbiological Testing Really FDA Compliant?

The FDA has been getting a little less predictable in the realm of microbiology. I first noticed the changes around January of this year (2025). Clickbait verbiage aside, there are two specific areas where we have seen not just an unmistakable change in FDA focus, but also a steep uptick in enforcement action. One is regarding microbial identifications and organism risk assessment (make sure you are subscribed to hear more on those topics). The other topic, which we will discuss here, concerns microbiological testing of water.

Samples vs. Test Portions: What’s the Difference?

Following our previous blog and webinar, “Validation of Alternative Methods for Larger Test Portion Sizes: The Bigger the Better?”, we received many questions about the concept of sampling and its impact on laboratory methods. To address these questions, we felt it important to clarify the relationship between sampling and method selection—and why this distinction is critical for our industry customers when determining fit-for-purpose methods for their products. Put simply, to effectively explain the “why,” we must first define the “what.”

Validation of Alternative Methods for Larger Test Portion Sizes: The Bigger the Better?

To ensure proper monitoring within a food production chain, sampling and testing is performed on numerous test portions, and various food matrices and environmental surfaces. However, sampling is a stochastic process, and the uncertainty of results is increased by the non-uniformed distribution of microorganisms in a food batch. The current trend in the food industry is to develop an appropriate sample pooling strategy to improve the efficiency of large-scale pathogen screening campaigns by reducing the number of tests. In addition to the cost-effective approach, the goal, of course, is to better assess the risk of a foodborne hazard.
